Cake Decoration Gallery

I am totally a novice at decorating cakes, I prefer to bake them, but in a world where amazingly decorated cakes is a big thing it has sparked my interest and, with two little boys to make birthday cakes for, I felt it was something I ought to practise. And so here are some of my (limited skill set "showstoppers"...

Dinosaur Island Birthday Cake
This is my latest bake for my eldest sons 4th Birthday on Bank Holiday Monday. He requested a dinosaur cake with "real dinosaurs on that he can play with" - which was great as it got me off the hook for making fondant ones! Phew! This cake was so much fun to make - its a 3 layer sponge cake consisting of 2 chocolate layers and a vanilla sponge (tinted green). I then sandwiched it with a green peppermint buttercream, coated it in chocolate buttercream and made the "grass" with the remaining peppermint buttercream. I then used orange flavour wafer straws to make a "fence" and then topped with a fondant lettering, volcano, river & nest, sugar paste flowers and then toy dinosaurs.

Teletubby Birthday Cake
My first ever hemisphere cake, made with vanilla sponge and decorated with a fondant teletubby theme. All decorations, bar the flowers, made by me. For my youngest sons first birthday 2019.

Blossom Cake
A blossom trail cake made for my good friend Nichola's birthday this year (2020).A lemon drizzle sponge, covered with a lemon buttercream and decorated with handmade blossoms, leaves and butterflies (not mine) and trimmed with diamante ribbon.

Giraffe Cake
This tricky little cake was made for my sisters birthday this year (2020). A chocolate sponge cake, covered in white chocolate fondant and fondant giraffe features. This was very tricky to do but my sister was over the moon with it.
Flower Topped Cake
This was my first attempt at making my own flowers using flower paste. They are so much fun to make and quite easy to do. This is a simple vanilla sponge, covered in a vanilla buttercream, trimmed with ribbon and topped with fondant flowers and leaves. This was for my Mum's birthday this year (2020).

Paw Patrol Rainbow Cake
A 6 layer vanilla flavour rainbow sponge covered with vanilla buttercream and then white fondant. I then covered the cake with handmade fondant paw prints and letters and trimmed it with a ribbon. I finished off the cake with a "spray" that I made myself. This was for my youngest sons 2nd Birthday (2020).

80th Birthday "Vintage Garden Party" Cake
This was my Nan's 80th Birthday cake (2019). It comprises of a 10 inch lemon drizzle sponge, covered with lemon buttercream and filled with lemon curd and a 7 inch coconut sponge cake, covered with coconut buttercream and sandwiched with strawberry jam. I then decorated the cake with a white chocolate drip and topped it with party rings, marshmallows, homemade meringue kisses, wafer butterflies and pieces of fudge.
Thomas the Tank Engine Cake
A chocolate hemisphere sponge cake covered in fondant icing for my eldest sons 3rd birthday (2019). All decorations are handmade by me using fondant icing, apart from the train which is a toy. This cake was a pleasure to make and my son absolutely loved it!
